These measures include the transition to the National Problem Gambling Helpline, increased funding for the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund, and comprehensive efforts by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) to maintain integrity and responsibility within the gaming industry.
Transition to the National Problem Gambling Helpline
One of the major steps Michigan has taken is the adoption of the National Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER. This move, spearheaded by the Michigan Lottery in collaboration with the MGCB, aims to unify support for responsible gaming across the state. The transition from the existing Michigan Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-270-7117) to 1-800-GAMBLER ensures consistency and streamlined access to resources for individuals facing gambling-related issues.
“The Lottery is committed to providing Michiganders with easy access to resources that support responsible gaming,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “By transitioning to 1-800-GAMBLER, we are able to ensure that Michigan residents can reach specially trained staff who can provide confidential professional support, local referrals, and resources to those who may have a gambling problem.”
Operated by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline is staffed by trained professionals available 24/7, 365 days a year. The helpline provides support, guidance, and relevant information to those seeking help with problem gambling. Additionally, individuals can access support via online chat at 1800gamblerchat.org or by texting 800GAM, ensuring multiple avenues for assistance.
Increased Funding for Responsible Gaming
The Michigan Legislature’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget includes a significant allocation of $6 million to the MGCB to support Michigan responsible gambling initiatives. This funding is divided into two primary areas: $3 million for the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund and another $3 million for the “Don’t Regret the Bet” campaign.
The Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund, overseen by the MGCB, supports the 24/7 Gambling Disorder Helpline operated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The fund also aids in gambling research and youth education, emphasizing the state’s commitment to preventing problem gambling from an early age.
The “Don’t Regret the Bet” campaign, which has been active since March 1, 2023, focuses on raising awareness about responsible gambling practices. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s support for this initiative highlights the state’s proactive approach to addressing problem gambling.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to Governor Whitmer and the Legislature for their commitment to enhancing the Michigan Gaming Control Board’s operations with their support of additional FTE positions, underscoring their dedication to strengthening the agency and its regulatory efforts,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “Moreover, the MGCB’s increased contribution, from $3 million to $6 million, to the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund demonstrates our proactive approach towards responsible gaming.”
College Sports Betting Panel Discussion
The MGCB recently hosted a panel discussion focusing on college sports betting regulations and compliance measures. This session brought together experts from various sectors, including representatives from BetMGM, the NCAA, IC360, and the FBI, to discuss the complexities of governing college sports betting.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board is dedicated to fostering a transparent and compliant gaming environment, particularly in the realm of college sports betting,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “By hosting this panel discussion and engaging with NCAA Division I collegiate officials involved with overseeing compliance, talking about ways in which we might be able to work together to prevent student-athletes from illegally gambling, we aim to uphold the highest standards of integrity and responsibility.”
Panelists emphasized the need for educational curriculums that address gambling, risk-taking, and decision-making, particularly for student-athletes. Dan Trolaro, Co-Managing Director of Education and Training Services at IC360, highlighted the importance of empowering student-athletes with the tools they need to succeed in life after college.
